Stability tests

Stability tests of cosmetic products are performed to ensure that the cosmetic product retains its intended physical, chemical and microbiological quality, as well as functionality and aesthetics when stored under appropriate conditions.

Due to the different nature of each cosmetic product, stability testing protocols are different.

Each manufacturer, given his knowledge of the formulation and intended use of the product, can develop and argue the most appropriate conditions for evaluating product stability.

When creating a stability testing protocol you must take care of:

• Conditions that will "accelerate and predict" the product's behavior when exposed to normal conditions of storage and use.
• Consider the impact of the primary packaging on the formulation
• Consider variations in process conditions.

Stability testing is a laboratory test in which formulation samples are subjected to various environmental/storage conditions over a period of time. In this way, what happens to the product during its life cycle is simulated. At certain, predetermined intervals, the samples are evaluated to see if and how they have changed.

The following are evaluated:

• Organoleptic characteristics: color, smell and appearance,
• Physico-chemical properties: pH value, viscosity, density, tracking of formulation ingredients (whenever applicable)
• Microbiological stability: microbial count and challenge test of the preservation system performed before and/or after the accelerated stability test.
• Compatibility between content and packaging (compatibility test)

If you do not have the necessary equipment and are not trained for this type of testing, it is best to leave it to the laboratories. We cooperate with accredited laboratories and can send samples for you.
