Do you need GMP in cosmetics?

GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) is a set of guidelines that you use in your daily work to ensure that each of your products is manufactured with the same quality, consistency and safety.

The GMP standard itself refers to the work of the staff, the organization and appearance of the premises, the marking and receipt of raw materials, and quality control of the finished product.

All companies that sell their cosmetic products must produce them according to this standard. According to the Cosmetic Regulation EU 1223/2009, you need to manufacture your product in accordance with this standard. This standard is also called ISO 22716. It is not an obligation to introduce and certify it, but you must work according to the requirements of GMP. The authorities can certainly require you to prove that you work according to these standards, so it is certainly desirable to have proof. When creating the PIF file, it is also necessary to make a statement that you work according to GMP standards.

According to the standard, it is stipulated that all employees must go through adequate education in order to know exactly what their tasks are and what their responsibilities are in the process of production, storage, quality control and transportation of products. It is necessary to know who is responsible for the processes and keep detailed records of everything that was done in the production itself.

The part where production is carried out must be equipped in such a way that it is easy to clean and disinfect, clean, orderly and organized so that there are no crossing paths during the production of products, storage of raw materials and finished products.

Quality control includes control of both incoming raw materials and the finished product. Each product must have a serial number so that in case of any problems it can be withdrawn from the market.

Many view GMP as a set of strict rules that are difficult to meet. It's not like that. GMP should be seen as a daily help in eliminating risks that may occur during the production of cosmetics. The ultimate goal is the creation of safe, quality products that customers will be satisfied with.

By certification according to the ISO 22716 (GMP) standard, you prove that you meet the requirements of this standard and prove to customers, business partners and other interested parties that you comply with legal regulations. You gain trust in the eyes of the public, business partners and authorities, and you can more easily market your products.
